The Italo-Turkish War was a conflict between the Kingdom of Italy and the Ottoman Empire.

It began on 29 September 1911 and lasted until 18 October 1912. The main goal was for Italy to take control of lands in Libya. These lands were part of the Ottoman Tripolitania Vilayet. This area included places like Tripoli, Cyrenaica, and Fezzan.

By winning, Italy turned these areas into its own colonies. This war was a very important event in history. Many people believe it was a precursor to the First World War.

This war was special because it used brand new technology. It was the first time airplanes were used in combat.

An Italian pilot named Capitano Carlo Piazza flew over enemy lines to look at the area. This was the first aerial reconnaissance mission in history. Shortly after, a pilot named Sottotenente Giulio Gavotti dropped the first aerial bomb. He used an early model of an aircraft called the Etrich Taube. Italy also used large airships, called dirigibles, to bomb positions.

These new tools changed how wars were fought forever.

Communication also changed during this time. Italy used a network of wireless telegraphy stations.

This is a way to send signals through the air without wires. The famous inventor Guglielmo Marconi actually came to Libya for this war. He worked with the Italian Corps of Engineers to conduct experiments. This helped the military stay in touch during the fighting. Using wireless signals was a major step forward for science and war.

Defending the land was a very hard job for the Ottoman Empire. Many of their regular troops were far away in places like Yemen.

Because of this, the Ottomans had to organize local Libyans to help defend the coast. Some famous leaders were also there to help, like Mustafa Kemal Pasha.

The Italian army also faced many problems during their landings. They did not have much experience with sea invasions. This led to difficult battles on the shores of Libya.

Italy eventually won the war and signed the Treaty of Ouchy in 1912.

Through this treaty, Italy gained possession of Libya. They also occupied the Dodecanese islands in the Aegean Sea for a while. Later, the Ottoman Empire gave up all its claims to those islands. This happened through the Treaty of Sèvres in 1920 and the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923.
