The Indian Space Research Organisation, or ISRO, is India's national space agency.

Its main office is in Bengaluru, Karnataka. ISRO is the main part of the Department of Space. The Prime Minister of India oversees this department. ISRO's job is to explore space and create new technology. They also manage many satellites for imaging and communication.

These satellites help people with many important tasks. They can help during disasters or help doctors with telemedicine.

ISRO works by launching many different kinds of rockets. These rockets carry satellites into orbit or send probes to other worlds.

Some rockets are small, while others are much larger. For example, the LVM3 is a heavy-lift launcher used for big satellites. The agency also uses cryogenic engines. These are special engines that use very cold fuel to provide power.

This technology allows India to launch heavy objects into space. ISRO even performs space docking. This is when two satellites meet and join together in space.

India's journey into space started with early scientific studies. In the 1920s, S. K. Mitra studied the upper atmosphere. Later, scientists like C. V. Raman and Meghnad Saha helped too.

In 1962, the government set up a group called INCOSPAR. This was done because scientist Vikram Sarabhai recommended it. The group was later renamed ISRO in 1969.

This change helped make space research a formal part of India.

ISRO has reached many amazing milestones with real numbers. In 1975, India launched its first satellite, Aryabhata. In 1980, the RS-1 satellite made India the seventh country to reach orbit.

ISRO has sent three missions to the Moon. One famous mission was Chandrayaan-1 in 2008. In 2013, the Mars Orbiter Mission reached Mars.

On August 23, 2023, the Chandrayaan-3 mission landed near the lunar south pole. This was a world first for any space program.

Many things we use today link back to space technology. The navigation systems like IRNSS help people find their way.

These systems are similar to the GPS used on phones. ISRO also works on the Gaganyaan mission. This project aims to send humans into space.

This will be a huge step for Indian science. Space research helps improve engineering and many other fields too.
