Scientists use a special idea called isospin to study tiny particles.

It helps them group particles that act in similar ways. For a long time, people thought protons and neutrons were different. Now we know they are very similar. They have almost the same mass. They only differ in their electric charge. This happens because of the quarks inside them. Quarks are the tiny parts that build particles. There are two main types: up quarks and down quarks. An up quark has a positive charge. A down quark has a negative charge.

Isospin is a number that describes these quarks. It is not real spin, even though the name sounds like it. The math is just similar to how spin works. Scientists use isospin to see how the strong force works. This force holds the center of an atom together. It treats protons and neutrons almost the same way. This is called isospin symmetry. This idea helped scientists find quarks. It also helped them understand how particles like Delta baryons work. These particles are made of three quarks. They have different charges but act like a family.
