He lived during the 19th century and helped lead the Bengal Renaissance. This was a time of new ideas and big changes in society. He was a very smart man who loved to learn. He was so dedicated to his studies that he once studied under a street light. He could not afford a gas lamp for his own home. Because he worked so hard, he earned the title Vidyasagar. Vidyasagar spent much of his life fighting for the rights of women. He believed that girls should have the chance to go to school. He served as a secretary for the Hindu Female School. This school later became known as the Bethune Female School. He also worked to stop child marriage. His efforts helped create the Age of Consent Act in 1891. This law set the minimum age for marriage at 12 years. He wanted to make sure life was fairer for everyone in his country.

One of his biggest goals was helping widows in India. At that time, many widows lived very difficult and sad lives. They often had to shave their heads and wear only white saris. Vidyasagar thought these customs were unfair and wanted to change them. He campaigned for a law that allowed Hindu widows to marry again. Many people strongly disagreed with him at first. They even wrote a petition against his ideas. However, Lord Dalhousie helped pass the Hindu Widows' Remarriage Act in 1856.

He was a brilliant student at the Sanskrit College in Calcutta. He studied many subjects like Sanskrit, philosophy, and astronomy. He graduated in 1841 after twelve years of hard work. He held important jobs at Fort William College and the Sanskrit College. In 1873, he moved to a small place called Karmatar. He lived there for more than 18 years. He built a girls' school and a night school for adults. He even opened a free clinic to give medicine to tribal people.

Today, many things in India are named to honor his memory.
