Isabella II was the Queen of Spain from 1833 until 1868. She holds a unique place in history as the only queen regnant of a unified Spain.

Isabella was born in 1830 at the Royal Palace of Madrid. She was the eldest daughter of King Ferdinand VII and Queen Maria Christina. Her father changed the laws of succession before she was born. He used a decree called the Pragmatic Sanction to allow his daughter to inherit the throne. This replaced the Salic Law, which had prevented women from ruling. Because she was only two years old when her father died, her mother served as regent.

Isabella's early years were defined by intense political conflict. Her uncle, Infante Carlos, refused to accept a female sovereign. This disagreement led to the Carlist Wars, a series of conflicts between supporters of Isabella and supporters of Carlos.

During this time, Spain began changing its government structure. The nation moved from an absolute monarchy toward a constitutional monarchy. This included the adoption of the Royal Statute of 1834 and the Constitution of 1837. In 1843, the government declared Isabella of age at thirteen. She then began her personal rule, though it was often influenced by military leaders and palace politics.

Her personal life and reputation became major sources of political instability. In 1846, the Moderate Party arranged her marriage to Francisco de Asís, the Duke of Cádiz. The marriage was unhappy and faced many public rumors.

Critics and political rivals used rumors about her personal conduct to damage her authority. In 1847, a scandal occurred when she showed affection for General Serrano. This event further hurt the public image of the monarchy. These personal issues often intersected with the "double trust" of power. This meant the Queen and the Cortes, or parliament, shared sovereignty, but this balance was often broken by political maneuvering.

Isabella also faced direct physical danger during her reign. In February 1852, an ordained priest named Merino attempted to attack her. He approached her while she was leaving the Royal Palace.

He stabbed her, but the impact was limited. The thick gold embroidery of her dress and the stays of her corset protected her vital organs. The attack resulted in only a minor incision on the right side of her belly. The man responsible was caught and executed by the state. This event highlighted the intense tensions between the monarchy and liberal activists.

Political unrest continued to shape her years as a leader. In 1854, a military coup known as the Vicalvarada took place in Vicálvaro.

This led to a full-scale revolution in the streets of Madrid. To prevent a civil war, Isabella appointed the popular General Espartero as prime minister. This period, known as the progressive biennium, saw attempts at liberal reform. However, these reforms were often interrupted by other military coups. Isabella's reign also saw Spain engage in several international conflicts. These included a war against Morocco from 1859 to 1860 and the Chincha Islands War against several South American nations.

In 1857, Isabella gave birth to a male heir named Alfonso. He was known by the nickname "the Bully" due to rumors regarding his biological father.

His birth changed the line of succession, as he became the Prince of Asturias. Despite the birth of a son, the political situation in Spain continued to decline. Opponents of the Queen began organizing in secret. In 1866, exiled democratic and progressive forces met in Belgium to form the Pact of Ostend. Their goal was to work together to overthrow the Isabelline monarchy.

The end of Isabella's reign came through revolution. In September 1868, a naval mutiny began in Cádiz. This event started the Glorious Revolution.

Marshal Francisco Serrano defeated the forces loyal to the Queen. This defeat forced Isabella into exile in France. In 1870, she formally abdicated the throne in favor of her son, Alfonso. Although the Bourbon monarchy was restored in 1874 under Alfonso XII, Isabella never regained her power. She lived in France until her death in 1904. Her reign remains a significant period of transition for the Spanish nation-state.
