Although the German mathematician Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz also developed calculus, Newton had been working on these ideas years earlier. Beyond calculus, Newton's mathematical reach was vast. He generalized the binomial theorem for any real number and introduced the Puiseux series. He also contributed to the study of Cremona transformations and the classification of cubic plane curves. His work laid the groundwork for vector analysis and the calculus of variations.

Beyond the laboratory, Newton held significant public roles. He served two terms as a Member of Parliament for the University of Cambridge.

He was also the president of the Royal Society from 1703 to 1727. In his later years, he moved to London to serve as Warden and then Master of the Royal Mint. In this role, he worked to increase the security and accuracy of British coinage. He was knighted by Queen Anne in 1705. His life of intense study and public service left an indelible mark on the modern scientific method.
