The geography of the region is dominated by diverse landforms and massive water systems. Much of the land consists of the hills and broad valleys of the Central Siberian Plateau. The Lena-Angara Plateau is another major feature of the landscape. Along the edges of Lake Baikal, you will find the Primorsky Range and the Baikal Mountains. In the northeast, the terrain rises into the North Baikal Highlands and the Patom Plateau. The highest point in the entire oblast is called Pik Tofalariya. Lake Baikal sits in the southeast of the region. It is the oldest and deepest lake in the world. This lake contains more than one-fifth of the Earth's fresh liquid surface water. The Angara River drains the lake and flows north across the province. To manage this water, the Irkutsk Dam controls the outflow rate. Other large dams exist at Bratsk and Ust-Ilimsk, which create large reservoirs on the Angara.

In the 18th century, Irkutsk also played a role in global exploration. The city helped organize Vitus Bering's first and second expeditions to Kamchatka. Merchant companies in Irkutsk even explored the Aleutian Islands and Alaska. In 1799, these companies formed the Russian-American Company. This group managed trades in the North-Eastern sea and the Aleutian and Kuril islands. The seafarer Grigorii Ivanovich Shelikhov was a key figure in controlling the northern Pacific. This era also saw the growth of education and culture. The first school in Eastern Siberia opened in 1725. By the 1780s, the region had a public library, a museum, and an amateur theater.
