The iPad is a widely recognized brand of tablet computers developed by Apple.

These devices serve as powerful tools for personal use, business, education, healthcare, and technology sectors. Because they are so popular, the term "iPad" is often used as a generic name for any tablet computer. As of 2022, Apple had sold over 670 million units. This massive success helped Apple become the largest vendor of tablet computers in the world.

To function, the iPad relies on an operating system, which is the software that manages the hardware. Older models used iOS, the same system found on the iPhone. However, in September 2019, Apple transitioned to a new system called iPadOS. This is a fork of iOS, meaning it is a modified version of the original code. iPadOS is designed with a user interface tailored for larger screens. It also provides better support for the specific hardware found in tablets.

Users interact with the device through the App Store to find various applications. Apple subjects these apps to a strict approval process for content and functionality. Some users attempt a process called jailbreaking to circumvent these official restrictions. Connectivity is another key feature of the iPad's mechanism. There are two main connectivity variants available. One version connects only via Wi-Fi. The other version includes additional support for cellular networks, allowing for mobile data use.

Apple's journey toward the iPad began decades before the first model arrived. In 1983, CEO Steve Jobs expressed a desire for a portable computer that could connect to large databases via radio links. In 1991, designer Jonathan Ive created the Macintosh Folio, a stylus-based tablet design. In 1993, Apple released the Newton MessagePad, a personal digital assistant led by John Sculley.

The MessagePad was not well-received due to poor handwriting recognition. Eventually, Apple moved forward with tablet prototypes like the K48 project to create the modern iPad.

The first-generation iPad was officially introduced on January 27, 2010. It featured a 1 GHz Apple A4 CPU and a multi-touch display with a resolution of 1,024 by 768 pixels.

Subsequent models have seen massive technical leaps. The second generation was 33% thinner and 15% lighter than the original. The third generation introduced the Retina Display, which had pixels 50% denser than standard displays. By the ninth generation in 2021, the A13 Bionic chip provided a 20% faster CPU and GPU. The tenth generation, released in 2022, replaced the Lightning port with a USB-C connector.

Apple organizes its iPad lineup into several distinct categories to meet different needs. The iPad Mini is a smaller version of the tablet. The iPad Air is designed to be both lighter and thinner than standard models. Finally, the iPad Pro serves as the flagship line, offering high-end performance.

Each line uses different processors and screen technologies. For example, the sixth-generation iPad Mini features an A15 Bionic chip and a Liquid Retina display. The iPad Pro models often include more advanced features for professional work.

To expand what the iPad can do, users can attach various accessories. The Apple Pencil allows for precise input, which is useful for drawing or note-taking. For typing, Apple offers the Smart Keyboard, Smart Keyboard Folio, and the Magic Keyboard.

There are also several adapters available to connect other devices. These tools allow the tablet to function more like a traditional laptop. By combining powerful software like iPadOS with specialized hardware, the iPad remains a central tool in modern computing.
