An inverter is a tiny tool for computers. It is also called a NOT gate.

This tool takes one signal and flips it. It uses bits, which are signals that are either a one or a zero. If you put a one in, it gives out a zero. If you put a zero in, it gives out a one. People sometimes call this flipping.

An inverter is a basic building block. It is one of three main tools. These three tools can build any kind of math circuit.

Inside a machine, the tool uses voltage. Voltage is a type of electrical power. A low voltage becomes a high voltage. A high voltage becomes a low voltage.

Engineers make these tools in different ways. One way uses a single transistor. A transistor is a tiny part that controls electricity. Some ways use two transistors. This is called a CMOS design. This way uses less power. It also works very fast.

Scientists use a graph to check the quality of an inverter. This graph is a voltage transfer curve. It shows how the tool switches between high and low.
