Introduction to evolution

This article covers sensitive topics: evolution. Parents can manage visibility in Parental Controls.

Evolution is the way all living things change over many generations. It is the main idea that biologists use to understand life on Earth. Scientists believe that all life comes from a single common ancestor. This idea is called common descent.

Because of evolution, we see so many different kinds of plants and animals today. It explains how early lifeforms grew into the huge, complex ecosystem we see now. The Earth is about 4.5 billion years old. The earliest evidence of life is at least 3.5 billion years old.

This process works through tiny changes in genes. Genes are the basic units of heredity that pass information from parents to offspring. These genes are made of DNA, which is a long molecule. You can think of DNA like an instruction manual for a living thing. Sometimes, mistakes happen when DNA is copied. These mistakes are called mutations.

Mutations create new variations among individuals in a population. Sexual reproduction also reshuffles these genes like mixing different hands of playing cards. This reshuffling helps create unique combinations in every new baby.

Natural selection is the way these changes spread through a group. In nature, not every individual can survive to have babies. There is often a struggle for resources like food. Some living things have traits that help them survive better than others. These helpful traits might help an animal find food or stay safe.

Because these individuals survive, they are more likely to reproduce. Their offspring will then inherit those helpful traits. Over many generations, these traits become more common in the whole population.

Charles Darwin helped us understand this in the 19th century. He served as a naturalist on the ship HMS Beagle. During his five-year voyage, he studied many organisms. He was very interested in life on the Galápagos Islands.

In 1859, he published his famous book, On the Origin of Species. He worked alongside Alfred Russel Wallace, who had a similar idea. Darwin also studied how orchids have special parts to attract insects.

This helped him see how species adapt to their homes.

Other scientists helped complete the picture of how evolution works. Gregor Mendel studied pea plants between 1856 and 1863. His work explained how traits are passed down through genetics. This helped explain the missing pieces that Darwin could not see. Today, evolution links many different subjects together. It is used in medicine, psychology, and even forensics.
