He was a missionary, a scholar, and a high-ranking leader. He served as a priest, a bishop, and an archbishop in the Americas. Later, he held the prestigious position of Metropolitan of Moscow and Kolomna. His life was defined by his dedication to studying indigenous cultures and languages. He is remembered for his work in Alaska and the Russian Far East. Many view him as a bridge between different worlds through his linguistic studies.

Born Ivan Evseyevich Popov on August 26, 1797, his early life was shaped by loss. His father, a church server, died when Ivan was six years old. He lived with his uncle, a parish deacon, in the village of Anginskoye. In 1807, at age ten, he entered the Irkutsk Theological Seminary. The rector renamed him Veniaminov to honor a deceased bishop. Ivan married Catherine in 1817 and was ordained a deacon that same year. By 1821, he was ordained a priest at the Church of the Annunciation in Irkutsk.

In 1823, Father Ioann Veniaminov volunteered for a mission to Unalaska.

He traveled with his mother, brother, wife, and infant son. The journey took one full year across land and water. They finally reached Unalaska on July 29, 1824. The family lived in an earthen hut while he began his work. He worked with local parishioners to build the Holy Ascension Church. This church was completed in July 1825.

Innocent was a gifted linguist, which is a person who studies languages. He mastered six different local dialects during his time in the Aleutian Islands. He created a new writing system for the Unangan dialect of Aleut. He used Cyrillic letters to build this alphabet. This allowed him to translate parts of the Bible into the local language. In 1828, he finished these translations. He also wrote scholarly works about the languages of the Russo-American territories. His books began to be published in 1840.

His career involved many different stages of leadership and travel. In 1834, he moved to Sitka to work with the Tlingit people. He studied their customs and wrote detailed notes on their tongues. In 1836, he traveled as far south as Fort Ross in Northern California. He conducted a census and performed religious sacraments there. In 1840, he became a monk and took the name Innocent.

Shortly after, he was consecrated as the Bishop of Kamchatka and the Aleutian Islands.

As a bishop and later an archbishop, his responsibilities grew significantly. In 1850, he was elevated to the rank of archbishop. He spent much time in the Yakut area, which joined his diocese in 1852. He focused heavily on translating scriptures into the Yakut (Sakha) language. In 1867, he reached a peak in his career. He was appointed the Metropolitan of Moscow. In this role, he managed church texts and raised funds for poor priests. He even established a retirement home for clergy members.

Innocent died on March 31, 1879. He was buried at the Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra near Moscow.

The Russian Orthodox Church later canonized him as a saint. This means they officially recognized him as a holy person. He is given the titles "Enlightener of the Aleuts" and "Apostle to America." His feast day is celebrated three times a year by the Orthodox Church. These dates are March 31, October 6, and October 18. His legacy lives on through the languages he preserved and the churches he built.

His work connects the fields of linguistics, history, and religion. By creating alphabets, he helped preserve the history of indigenous peoples. His scholarly books remain important records of 19th-century Alaskan life. He showed how religious leaders can also be academic researchers. His ability to navigate different cultures helped shape the history of the Russian Far East. Today, he is studied by those interested in both religious history and North American indigenous studies.
