Modern inline skates became popular in the 1980s. Scott Olson helped make them famous. He used plastic ski boots and polyurethane wheels. Polyurethane is a type of tough plastic.

Designers must balance these two movements carefully. A powerful stride requires high static friction for a strong push-off. Conversely, a smooth glide requires low rolling friction to maintain efficiency.

A modern inline skate consists of several integrated components. The boot is the part worn on the foot to provide support. Attached to the bottom of the boot is the frame, which is the most rigid part.

The frame holds the wheels in place using wheel axles. Between each wheel and its axle sit two bearings. These bearings allow the wheels to rotate freely. Most recreational models also include a rubber brake on the right boot.

Boot design has evolved significantly to offer different levels of control. In the 1980s, most inline skates used hard boots inspired by ski designs. These often featured a removable liner for a snug fit. By 1996, K2 introduced soft boots with an exoskeleton for more comfort. More recently, the high-end market introduced hybrid boots. These feature an integrated, non-removable liner glued to a rigid endoskeleton. This design ensures direct power transfer from the foot to the wheels.

The history of wheeled skates began in the early 18th century. Inventors wanted to emulate the gliding sensation of ice blades on dry land. The first patented wheeled skate was filed in France by Charles-Louis Petibled in 1819.

In 1863, James Plimpton invented a quad skate with a two-by-two configuration. His design included a mechanism that allowed skaters to steer by leaning. This invention triggered a period of intense popularity known as "rinkomania" during the 1860s and 1870s.

Modern inline skating owes much to the work of Scott Olson. In 1979, Olson began modifying Super Sport Skates for hockey players. He replaced stock boots with hockey boots and used polyurethane wheels.

He eventually developed a design using a plastic ski boot and an adjustable frame. After resolving patent issues with the Chicago Roller-Blade, Olson founded Rollerblade, Inc. around 1988.

The term "rollerblading" became so common it turned into a generic trademark.

Choosing skates involves making specific technical trade-offs. Frame length affects the balance between stability and turning agility. Longer frames provide more stability, while shorter frames allow for easier turning. Wheel hardness also plays a critical role in performance. Softer polyurethane wheels provide better grip on smooth indoor surfaces. Harder wheels are better for rough outdoor surfaces because they wear down more slowly. Finally, skaters choose between flat wheel setups for stability or rockered setups for maneuverability.
