People work in many places.

People work in many ways.

People work in many ways. Some work for a boss. Others join groups called unions.
It began after the Industrial Revolution. During that time, many people worked in big factories. Work was often hard and dangerous. Many people had low pay and long hours. This led to many strikes. A strike is when workers stop working to ask for change.
Experts started to study these problems. In 1920, John R. Commons started a program at the University of Wisconsin. Later, the Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations opened in 1945.
There are different ways to think about work. Some people think a company should be like one happy family. This is called unitarism. Others think conflict is a natural part of work. This is called pluralism. They use collective bargaining to solve problems. This means groups talk to reach an agreement.
Industrial relations is a way of studying how people work together. It looks at the links between bosses and workers. It also looks at groups called unions and the government. Some people now call this field "employment relations." This new name is used more often today. It helps show that these rules apply to all kinds of jobs. It is not just for big factories or industrial sites. This field helps us understand how work life stays organized.
Experts in this field look at how power works in a job. They often find that bosses have more power than workers. This can lead to natural disagreements between the two sides. For example, a boss might want higher profits. A worker might want higher wages instead. Because of this, scholars study how to make things fair. They look at laws and rules that protect people at work. They also study how workers can have a voice in their jobs.
This study grew out of the Industrial Revolution. During that time, many people moved to work in huge factories. Work was often very hard and dangerous for them. Many workers faced low pay and very long hours. This caused many angry strikes and social unrest. In 1897, Sidney and Beatrice Webb wrote a famous book about this. It was called "Industrial Democracy." This helped turn these problems into a real subject for study.
Many important people helped build this field in schools. John R. Commons started the first program in 1920 at the University of Wisconsin. Later, the Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations opened in 1945. Other famous schools also started around that time. In the UK, leaders like Allan Flanders helped create the "Oxford school." In the 1930s, many more workers joined unions in the United States. This led to more studying of how to solve work conflicts.
There are three main ways to think about these workplace relations. Some people believe in "unitarism," where a company is like one happy family. They think everyone should work toward the same goal without unions. Others follow "pluralism," which sees different groups with different interests. Pluralists use collective bargaining to reach fair deals. A third group, the "critical school," sees deep conflicts in the system. Even though the field is changing, these ideas still matter today.
Industrial relations, also called employment relations, is a field of study. It examines the complex links between employers and employees. It also looks at trade unions, employer organizations, and the state. Scholars use this field to understand how people work together. Some people prefer the term "employment relations" today. This name suggests the study covers all types of jobs. It is not limited to factory work or industrial settings.
This field functions as a branch of the social sciences. It uses rigorous research to study the employment relationship. Scholars in this area look at many different topics. They connect with fields like economics, sociology, and political science. They also study law and social history. A core idea is that labor markets are not perfectly competitive. This means employers often have more bargaining power than workers. Because of this, conflicts of interest are seen as natural. For example, a boss might seek higher profits. A worker might seek higher wages.
There are different ways to view these workplace conflicts. One major view is called the pluralist perspective. Pluralists see an organization as having many different groups. These groups, like management and unions, have their own interests. Pluralists believe conflict is a normal part of work. They use tools like collective bargaining to solve problems. They also support things like minimum wage laws. These tools help create a balance of power. This balance aims for both economic efficiency and fairness.
A second view is the unitarist perspective. Unitarists see an organization as one harmonious whole. They often describe a company as if it were "one happy family." In this view, everyone shares the same common purpose. This approach is often paternalistic. It asks for total loyalty from all employees. Because of this, unitarists believe trade unions are unnecessary. They think loyalty to the company and unions cannot exist together.
A third view is the critical or radical school. This perspective is often inspired by Marxist theories. It sees the conflict between bosses and workers as very deep. These scholars believe the conflict is part of the entire economic system. They argue that trying to balance interests gives too much power to employers. Instead, they believe the system needs deep structural reforms. This group often supports militant trade unions to create change.
The history of this field began during the Industrial Revolution. This era created large-scale organizations with many wage workers. Many workers faced very difficult conditions. They dealt with low wages and dangerous work. These problems led to violent strikes and social instability. In 1897, Sidney and Beatrice Webb published "Industrial Democracy." This book helped establish the field as a middle ground. It sat between classical economics and Marxism.
Many people helped build the field in universities. John R. Commons created the first program in 1920. He did this at the University of Wisconsin. Later, the Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations opened in 1945. This was one of over seventy-five new programs created after World War II. In the United Kingdom, the "Oxford school" emerged in the 1950s. Scholars like Allan Flanders and Otto Kahn-Freund were key leaders. They helped make industrial relations a formal academic discipline.
Today, the field of industrial relations is changing. It is sometimes described as being in a state of crisis. Many business schools now prefer human resource management. Trade unions are also seeing a decline in membership. Some policy makers prefer "laissez-faire" free markets. This means they prefer less government intervention in the workplace. Despite these shifts, the lessons of the field remain vital. Understanding how power and rules work is still very important for society.
