Indra Nooyi is a highly influential Indian-born American business executive. She is best known for her long leadership at PepsiCo, Inc. She served as the company's chief executive officer (CEO) from 2006 to 2018. She also served as the chair of the board of directors from 2007 to 2019. A CEO is the highest-ranking person in a company. Nooyi was instrumental in restructuring and diversifying the company. This means she changed how the company was organized to make it more successful. Her work helped the company manage many different food and drink brands.

Nooyi's journey began in Madras, India, which is now called Chennai. She was born on October 28, 1955, as the second of three children. Her father worked at the State Bank of Hyderabad. Her mother was a homemaker who used strategic games to teach her daughters. When Nooyi was a young girl, her mother had her write speeches about holding power. These exercises prepared her for future leadership roles. Nooyi also excelled in cricket and played the guitar in a band. She earned degrees in physics, chemistry, and mathematics in 1975. Later, she moved to the United States to attend the Yale School of Management. She earned a master's degree in public and private management in 1980.

Before leading PepsiCo, Nooyi built a strong career in various roles. She worked as a product manager for Johnson & Johnson and Beardsell Ltd. She also worked as a strategy consultant for the Boston Consulting Group. Later, she served as a vice president at Motorola. Nooyi joined PepsiCo in 1994. She worked her way up through several senior roles. She served as the senior vice president for strategic planning and corporate strategy. She also became the chief financial officer (CFO), which is the person in charge of a company's money. In 2006, she replaced Steven Reinemund as the fifth CEO in the company's 44-year history.

Nooyi led several major business changes that shaped PepsiCo. In 1997, she led the divestiture of Tricon. This means the company sold off brands like Pizza Hut, KFC, and Taco Bell. This move gave the company more money to grow. She also managed the $3.3 billion acquisition of Tropicana in 1998. In 2001, she helped manage the merger with the Quaker Oats Company. This merger was very important because it brought Gatorade into PepsiCo. At that time, Gatorade held 80% of the sports drink market. This gave PepsiCo a strong position against competitors like Coca-Cola.

One of Nooyi's most famous strategies was called "Performance with a Purpose." This plan focused on making money while also helping society and the environment. She divided PepsiCo's products into three specific categories. The first was "fun for you," which included items like regular soda and chips. The second was "better for you," which included diet or low-fat snacks. The third was "good for you," which included items like oatmeal. She moved company spending toward these healthier options. She also worked on sustainability by reducing waste and using renewable energy.

Nooyi's leadership led to massive financial growth for the company. Under her guidance, PepsiCo's annual net profit rose from $2.7 billion to $6.5 billion. She was recognized globally for her power and influence. In 2014, Forbes ranked her as the 13th most powerful woman in the world. In 2015 and 2017, Fortune ranked her as the second most powerful woman. She was also named to the Times 100 Most Influential People in the World. Her tenure as CEO lasted 12 years. This was seven years longer than the average CEO tenure at large companies.

Even after stepping down as CEO in 2018, Nooyi remained active. She served as the chair of PepsiCo until early 2019. She also became a co-director for the Connecticut Economic Resource Center. In 2020, she helped plan how to safely reopen Connecticut during the COVID-19 pandemic. Nooyi has received many honors, including the Padma Bhushan from India. She has also been inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame. Her career shows how strategic planning and a focus on purpose can change a global company.
