In 1821, leaders decided to make this the new seat of government. Two men named Alexander Ralston and Elias Pym Fordham designed the city. They used a grid system to lay out the streets. This means the roads cross each other in straight lines. Later, new roads and railroads helped the city grow even faster. These paths made it a great place for business and making goods.

Long before the city was built, Indigenous peoples lived on this land. People lived in this area as far back as 10,000 BC. The Miami Nation of Indiana and the Lenape people held the land. In 1818, a treaty called the Treaty of St. Mary's was signed. This agreement meant the tribes would leave the central Indiana area.

After this, settlers from places like Europe began to arrive. Some families, like the McCormicks or Pogues, were among the first to stay. They built homes near the river and small creeks.

The Indiana General Assembly chose this site to be the new state capital. Alexander Ralston and Elias Pym Fordham designed the city layout. They used a grid system to organize the streets. The city's name comes from the state name, Indiana, and the Greek word "polis," which means city. Jeremiah Sullivan is credited with coining the name. The city grew quickly due to the National Road and later the arrival of railroads. These developments turned the settlement into a manufacturing and commercial center.

The American Civil War was a significant period for the city. Indianapolis remained mostly loyal to the Union cause. Governor Oliver P. Morton helped make the city a rallying place for Union troops. President-elect Abraham Lincoln visited the city in February 1861.

During the war, the city became a vital logistics hub. It served as a headquarters for state volunteer soldiers. Between 1860 and 1870, the population of the city more than doubled. In 1865, a massive crowd of 100,000 people gathered to watch Lincoln's funeral train pass by. This event showed the deep connection between the city and the national struggle.

As the 19th century ended, the city entered a period of great prosperity. By 1880, Indianapolis was the third-largest pork packing city in the world. It also became a massive railroad center.
