The magazine works by gathering news and sharing it every week. It started as a magazine that came out every two weeks. In June 1997, it changed to a weekly format to keep up with fast news. It also uses a special science called psephology to study election polls. This science was introduced through a partnership with Prannoy Roy and David Butler. The magazine also holds a big yearly meeting called a conclave. In this meeting, leaders from many fields come together to talk. They discuss things like the economy, technology, and culture.

History shows how much the magazine has grown since it began. Vidya Vilas Purie established the magazine in 1975. His daughter, Madhu Trehan, served as the editor. His son, Aroon Purie, served as the publisher. At the start, only about 5,000 copies were sent out. By December 1978, that number grew to over 100,000 copies. In 1982, they even launched an international edition for the world. This edition was sent to 104 different countries.

There are many important facts about how many people read the magazine. In 2019, the English edition had 9.24 million readers. The Hindi edition had 7.02 million readers. This made them two of the most read magazines in India. By January 2026, the magazine had published 2,006 issues. To celebrate 50 years, they made a huge 600-page special issue. This issue was called "The Remaking of India: 1975–2025." It covered five decades of history in India.

You might know other magazines that come out every week or month. India Today is like a weekly guide to what is happening in India. It helps people stay informed about big events. For example, it sends reporters to cover major global events. This includes things like the Afghan War or the collapse of the Soviet Union. It even helps people understand how their own states are doing. In 2025, they started a survey to measure how people act in public. This helps everyone learn how to be better citizens.
