He was a Canadian doctor and a soldier. He was in the Second Battle of Ypres in Belgium. During this battle, a close friend named Alexis Helmer died. McCrae led the funeral for his friend. He saw red poppies growing near the wooden crosses. He wrote the poem the next day. He sat in the back of an ambulance to write it.

McCrae did not think his poem was perfect at first. Some stories say he crumpled the paper and threw it away. Other soldiers found it and gave it back to him. One soldier named Cyril Allinson saw him writing it. Allinson was moved by the words and memorized them. The poem was first published on December 8, 1915. It appeared in a London magazine called Punch. At first, the magazine did not say who wrote it. They later added McCrae's name to the index.

There is a small mystery about the poem's first line.

In his own writing, McCrae used the word "grow." The magazine changed the word to "blow." People still talk about which word is correct today. The poem became very popular very quickly. It was used to help recruit soldiers for the war. It was also used to sell war bonds to raise money. Many people used the poem to show why the war mattered.

Today, the poem and the poppy are very important symbols.
