Your body has a system to fight germs. This is called the immune system. Sometimes, this system does not work well. We call this state immunodeficiency. When this happens, a person is immunocompromised. This means their body has a hard time fighting sickness. It can also make it harder to fight cancer.

There are two main ways this happens. Some people are born with it. This is called primary immunodeficiency. It often comes from their family. Other people get it later in life. This is called secondary immunodeficiency. It can be caused by many things. HIV is one cause. Poor nutrition can also be a cause. Some medicines, like steroids, can lower your body's defenses too. This is often done on purpose for organ transplants.

The immune system has many parts. Some people lack antibodies. Antibodies are tiny proteins that find and fight germs. One type is called IgG. Babies rely on IgG from their mothers to stay safe. Other people might have problems with T cells. These cells help the body fight many infections. Doctors use blood tests to study these parts. This helps them find the right way to help.
