Immigration law

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Every country has laws about immigration. These laws decide who can enter a land. They also decide how long a person can stay. Some laws control where people can move. They even set rules for goods people bring with them.

Many people move for work. Some farm workers move only for a short time. Other people move to stay safe. These people are called refugees. They may flee from bad treatment in their home. Some may even be stateless. This means they have no country to call their own. A country might give them asylum. Asylum is a safe place for those in danger.

Some countries have special ways for people to move. For example, some offer investor programs. People can get a visa by giving money to the country. These programs started in the 1980s. Some leaders think these programs are not good. They worry about safety or money.

Laws change often. Rules can change based on what is happening in the world. During the COVID-19 pandemic, some borders closed. This changed how people could travel to new places.
