During his life, he published approximately one hundred different titles. He worked across many genres, including novels, poetry, and travel writing. Ehrenburg was particularly famous for his work as a war correspondent. He reported from the front lines of three major conflicts: the First World War, the Spanish Civil War, and the Second World War. His writing often captured the intense emotions of these historical eras. His diverse body of work helped shape the cultural landscape of the Soviet Union.

Ehrenburg's journalistic method often involved direct engagement with conflict. During the Second World War, he wrote more than 2,000 articles for Soviet newspapers.

He viewed the war as a dramatic struggle between good and evil. His articles were often incendiary, meaning they were intended to stir up strong emotions. This style earned him a massive following among front-line soldiers. However, his intense tone also caused significant controversy. Some critics argued his writing promoted excessive hatred toward the German people. Ehrenburg later clarified his position to his readers. He stated his anger was directed at German aggressors who invaded Soviet soil, not the entire German population.

His literary career included several distinct stages and influential works. In the 1920s, he wrote avant-garde picaresque novels, such as *The Extraordinary Adventures of Julio Jurenito and his Disciples*.

He also explored the it-narrative genre with *The Life of the Automobile* in 1929. Later, his novel *The Thaw* became a landmark in Soviet literature. This book described a corrupt factory boss to represent the rigid political atmosphere of the time. The term "the thaw" eventually came to describe the period of political liberalization that followed the death of Joseph Stalin. This era allowed for more freedom in writing and social thought.

Ehrenburg's early life was marked by political upheaval and movement. He was born in Kiev to a Lithuanian-Jewish family.

When he was four, his family moved to Moscow. As a young man, he became involved in the illegal activities of the Bolshevik organization. In 1908, the tsarist secret police, known as the Okhrana, arrested him for five months. After his release, he lived in exile in Paris. In the Montparnasse district, he became part of a bohemian circle. He befriended famous artists like Pablo Picasso, Diego Rivera, and Amedeo Modigliani.

He also met the revolutionary leader Vladimir Lenin during this period.

One of Ehrenburg's most significant historical contributions was his work on *The Black Book*.

Alongside Vasily Grossman, he edited this volume to document the Holocaust in the Soviet Union. This work described the genocide committed against Soviet citizens of Jewish ancestry by the Nazis. Because of its sensitive subject matter, the book was denounced as "anti-Soviet" and banned from publication. It was not released to the public until 1980 in Jerusalem. This project highlighted his commitment to recording the experiences of Jewish people, even when it was dangerous to do so.

Ehrenburg's life was also shaped by the complex politics of the Soviet state. In 1948, he received the Stalin Peace Prize.

However, he faced great danger during the "anti-cosmopolitan" campaign, which targeted Jewish intellectuals. During this time, his name was included on lists of people considered for arrest by the police. Despite this pressure, he continued to take public positions against antisemitism. In 1953, he even wrote a letter to Stalin to oppose the collective punishment of Jewish people. His ability to navigate these political tensions allowed him to remain a prominent figure abroad.

Ultimately, Ehrenburg's work connects literature to the study of history and human rights. His memoirs, such as *People, Years, Life*, provide deep insights into the era he lived through. He left his personal papers to Yad Vashem, an institution dedicated to the memory of the Holocaust. His life demonstrates how a writer can act as both a witness to war and a participant in political change. Through his many roles, he helped document the massive shifts of the 20th century.
