The album is widely considered a landmark in East Coast hip-hop. Many critics call it one of the greatest hip-hop albums ever made. Billboard even suggested it might be the best hip-hop album in history. It is celebrated for its complex lyricism and its high-quality production.

The album functions as a collection of detailed, first-person narratives. Nas uses multi-syllabic internal rhymes to tell stories about his life. These stories are based on his experiences growing up in the Queensbridge Houses. This is a housing project located in the Long Island City section of Queens, New York.

Nas began writing these lyrics when he was only 16 years old. He describes the life of an inner-city teenager with great specificity. His songs act like a report from the streets of his neighborhood.

To create the sound of the album, Nas worked with several famous producers. These producers provided the beats, which are the musical backdrops for the rapping. DJ Premier, Large Professor, Pete Rock, Q-Tip, and L.E.S. all handled production. Nas also contributed to the production himself.

One notable track, "Life's a Bitch," even includes a cornet solo by Nas's father, Olu Dara. The recording process took place across several New York City locations. These included Chung King Studios, D&D Recording, Battery Studios, and Unique Recording Studios.

Nas's journey to this album involved many different stages and challenges. He initially performed under the nicknames Kid Wave and Nasty Nas. At age 15, he met the producer Large Professor, who introduced him to the group Main Source. Nas made his recorded debut on the song "Live at the Barbeque" in 1991. He later released the single "Halftime" in 1992 for a film soundtrack. During this time, he faced the tragic loss of his friend and DJ, Willy "Ill Will" Graham. This event served as a major "wake-up call" for the young artist.

Finding a record deal was a critical step in the album's creation. After being rejected by labels like Def Jam, Nas was discovered by MC Serch. Serch helped Nas secure a contract with Sony Music Entertainment through executive Faith Newman. Once the deal was set, Serch acted as the executive producer for the project. He helped connect Nas with various talented producers to ensure a high-quality sound. This collaboration helped bring the vision of the album to life.

The commercial success of Illmatic grew steadily over many years. In its first week, the album sold 59,000 copies and reached number 12 on the US Billboard 200. While initial sales were lower than expected, the album's reputation grew through critical acclaim. It was certified gold by the RIAA on January 17, 1996. Later, on December 11, 2001, it earned a platinum certification. This meant it had shipped 1,000,000 copies in the United States. By February 6, 2019, total sales in the U.S. reached 2 million copies.

Beyond music sales, Illmatic has a deep cultural significance. It is credited with helping to revive the New York City rap scene. The album introduced new stylistic trends to the entire region. In 2021, the Library of Congress selected it for the National Recording Registry. This is a special list for recordings that are culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.
