Identity matrix

math Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Think about the number one. If you multiply any number by one, it stays the same. In math, we have a tool that does this for matrices. This tool is called an identity matrix.

A matrix is a grid of numbers. An identity matrix is a square grid. It has a special pattern. It has ones on a line from corner to corner. This line is called the main diagonal. Every other spot in the grid has a zero.

This matrix is very special. It can act like a shape shifter. But when it shifts a shape, nothing changes. The object stays exactly the same. This is why we call it an identity matrix.

In math books, people use symbols for it. They might use a bold number one. They might also use the letters "id". Some people call it a unit matrix. However, "identity matrix" is the most common name now. The determinant of this matrix is one. Its rank is equal to its size.
