Identity element

math Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Some things do not change a group. Imagine you have a pile of blocks. You add zero blocks to it. The pile stays the same size. In math, we call this an identity.

Zero is an identity for adding. It does not change the number. One is an identity for multiplying. If you multiply by one, it stays the same.

Some math rules have no identity. This means nothing can keep the group the same. You can also have more than one left identity. But a true identity must work both ways. It is a special tool for math.
