Icelandic Commonwealth

history Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Long ago, people lived on an island called Iceland. They did not have a king to rule them. Instead, they had leaders called chieftains. These leaders helped people follow the law.

Every year, people met in a large group. This group was called the Althing. They met in a place with big plains. They talked about new rules there.

One man even traveled to learn laws. He came back to help Iceland. This made their rules very strong.

Sometimes, leaders fought for more power. This caused many problems for the people. It was a hard time to live.

Later, the King of Norway took control. The leaders signed a paper to agree. This changed how Iceland was run.
