Abdulaziz bin Abdul Rahman Al Saud, known in the West as Ibn Saud, was a powerful statesman and religious leader. He was the founder and the first king of the modern Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. His name, Ibn Saud, means "son of Saud." This was a title used by previous heads of the House of Saud, much like a clan chief's title. He reigned as king from September 23, 1932, until his death on November 9, 1953.

Ibn Saud's early life was marked by political struggle and exile. He was born in Riyadh around 1876, though some records suggest 1880. His father, Abdul Rahman bin Faisal, was the Emir of Nejd, which was a tribal sheikhdom. In 1890, the House of Saud lost control of Riyadh to their rivals, the Al Rashid family. This forced Ibn Saud and his family to flee their home. They lived in various places, including Qatar and Bahrain, before settling in Kuwait for nearly ten years.

While in Kuwait, Ibn Saud built important relationships with local rulers. He frequently visited the majlis, or meeting place, of the Kuwaiti ruler, Mubarak Al Sabah. This period of exile ended with a bold military action. On January 15, 1902, Ibn Saud led a group of 40 men to recapture Riyadh. They famously climbed over the city walls using tilted palm trees. This victory was a turning point that started the third Saudi state.

Following the capture of Riyadh, Ibn Saud began decades of territorial conquests. He was a charismatic leader who could keep his men well-supplied with arms. In 1904, his forces faced a major defeat from combined Ottoman and Rashidi forces. However, he used guerrilla warfare to disrupt their supply routes and force a retreat. By 1912, he had completed his conquest of the Nejd and the eastern coast of Arabia. He also formed the Ikhwan, a military-religious brotherhood, to assist his expansion.

Ibn Saud also used diplomacy to secure his growing borders. In 1915, he signed the Treaty of Darin with the British government. This treaty made the lands of the House of Saud a British protectorate. He also met with British High Commissioner Percy Cox in 1922 to sign the Treaty of Uqair. This agreement helped define boundaries and saw Britain recognize many of his territorial gains.

His leadership led to the official creation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1932. This followed his conquest of the Hejaz region in 1925. During his reign, a major economic shift occurred in 1938 with the discovery of petroleum. Large-scale oil production began after World War II, which transformed the nation's wealth.

Ibn Saud's influence reached far beyond his own borders. His victories and support for Islamic revivalists helped strengthen pan-Islamism across the Islamic world. He also established a lasting political dynasty. He fathered 45 sons, and all of the subsequent kings of Saudi Arabia were his descendants.
