Kershaw began as a student of the Middle Ages. He changed his focus in the 1970s. He wanted to know why people supported the Nazi party. He visited Bavaria and met an old man. The man had very hateful views. This meeting made Kershaw want to study the truth. He wanted to see how normal people acted during that time.

He worked on the Bavaria Project. This project helped him write books about everyday life. He looked at how people reacted to the Nazi rule. He found that many people were just focused on their own lives. He said many people were indifferent. This means they did not care about what happened to others. Some historians disagree with him. They think people were more involved in the hate. Kershaw also wrote about how different experts view the Nazi era. He helps us understand this hard part of history.
