Long ago, a land called Đại Việt grew strong. 

Many different families ruled the land. Some families ruled for a very long time. Other families ruled for just a short time.
The land grew larger as time went on. It spread out to new places in the south. 
Đại Việt was the name for many Vietnamese kingdoms. 
In 968, a leader named Đinh Bộ Lĩnh took control. 
Many ruling families held power over time. These included the Đinh, Lý, Trần, and Lê families. Some families ruled for many years. Others ruled for only a short time.
For a long time, the land was one single state. But from 1533 to 1802, it was split apart. During this time, different groups ruled different areas. This split lasted for 262 years.
The land grew larger over the years. It spread toward the south and west. In 1804, the name changed to Việt Nam. 
Đại Việt was the official name for several Vietnamese kingdoms. 

The story of Đại Việt began with a leader named Đinh Bộ Lĩnh. In 968, he adopted the name Đại Cồ Việt. He did this after his successful campaigns ended a time of local fighting.

Conflict and reunification defined the later years of the state. The period of fragmentation lasted for 262 years. It involved wars between the Lê and Mạc families, and the Trịnh and Nguyễn families.
