The hyoid bone is a special bone in your neck.

It is shaped like a horseshoe. Most bones in your body connect to other bones. The hyoid is the only bone that does not touch any other bone. Instead, it is held in place by muscles and ligaments. Ligaments are tough tissues that connect parts of the body.

The bone has three main parts. It has a central part called the body. It also has two pairs of horns. These are called the lesser horns and the greater horns.

The hyoid bone helps you do many things. It helps your tongue move. It also helps you swallow food. It helps with breathing and speech. The bone sits above the thyroid cartilage. This is the part of the throat often called the Adam's apple.

Many animals have this bone too. In some animals, it helps them make sounds. For example, a lion can roar because its hyoid is not fully ossified. Ossification is the way bone hardens. A cheetah has a fully hard bone. This lets it purr instead of roar.
