Hydrologists apply their knowledge to many practical tasks. They calculate rainfall, evapotranspiration, and surface runoff to determine the water balance of a region. This data is vital for designing irrigation schemes and managing agricultural productivity. Hydrologists also work on disaster mitigation. They predict and mitigate risks from floods, landslides, and droughts.
