Hyder Ali was the Sultan and the primary ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore in southern India.
Hyder Ali's rise to power began with his military service. He was born in Budikote, which is in the modern Kolar district of Karnataka. His father, Fath Muhammad, was a commander of a small unit of bamboo rocket artillery. After his father died in combat, Hyder Ali entered military service with his brother, Shahbaz. He initially served under the Nizam of Hyderabad and later worked for the Wodeyar rulers of Mysore. He grew his influence by commanding large groups of soldiers. By the time he was a rising leader, he commanded 1,000 cavalry and 2,000 infantry.
His career was marked by several important military conflicts. During the Second Carnatic War in 1749, he helped during the Siege of Devanahalli Fort. This eight-month siege helped him earn larger commands from the Mysorean leaders. In 1755, he was appointed the Faujdar, or military commander, of Dindigul. In this role, he began using French advisers to train his artillery companies. He also participated in the siege of Tiruchirappalli in 1752. These early experiences gave him the skills needed to lead an entire kingdom.
Hyder Ali used clever methods to manage the state's resources. Although he was illiterate, he possessed a prodigious memory and great skill with numbers. He worked with a Brahmin assistant named Khande Rao to manage finances. Together, they developed a system of checks and balances to track all income. This included accounting for the plunder of physical goods from military campaigns. This strict management helped prevent fraud and embezzlement within the government. Such financial stability was a key reason for his successful rise to power.
His expansion of the kingdom involved capturing several key territories. In 1758, he successfully forced the Marathas to lift their siege of Bangalore. He captured the city and later defeated a much larger Maratha army at the Siege of Channapatna in 1759. He also led campaigns against the Zamorin of Calicut on the Malabar Coast. By 1766, he had absorbed Kozhikode into his state. These victories unified many smaller states under the rule of Mysore.
Hyder Ali eventually took full control of the government in 1761. He overthrew the prime minister and made the king, Krishnaraja Wodeyar II, a prisoner in his own palace. He formally styled himself as Sultan Hyder Ali Khan in his official letters. His rule was characterized by frequent wars with neighbors and rebellions within his own lands. He also fought the East India Company during the First and Second Anglo-Mysore Wars. To strengthen his military, he formed an alliance with the French to improve his arsenal.
By the end of his life, Hyder Ali had built an extensive and powerful kingdom. His territory was bordered by the Krishna River in the north and the Arabian Sea in the west. The Eastern Ghats formed his border to the east. He left this large kingdom to his eldest son, Tipu Sultan. Hyder Ali died on December 7, 1782. His life remains a significant example of how military skill and financial management can transform a person's place in history.
