The storm began as a small group of clouds. It moved into the Gulf of Mexico. There, the warm water made it much stronger. It became a Category 5 hurricane. This means it had extremely high winds.

On August 29, the storm hit Louisiana. It was then a Category 3 hurricane. The storm brought a huge amount of water. This water caused terrible flooding. In New Orleans, the water rose very high.

This happened because some walls meant to hold back water broke. These walls are called levees. Many people lost their homes and lives. The storm caused about $125 billion in damage.

Many people helped after the storm. Groups like the Coast Guard worked to save people. Some leaders were criticized for their work. Others were praised for their good forecasts. Because the storm was so bad, its name was retired. This means it will not be used for future storms.
