This article covers sensitive topics: politics. Parents can manage visibility in Parental Controls.

Long ago in China, leaders wanted new ideas. A leader named Mao said, "Let flowers bloom."

He wanted people to share their thoughts. He wanted them to talk about art and science.

Many people began to speak up. They wrote letters and put up posters. They shared many different views. Some people even criticized the leaders.

But then, things changed. The leaders felt the talk went too far. They called the new ideas "poisonous weeds."

Many people were treated unfairly for speaking. They were sent away to work in camps. This was a very hard time for them.

It was a short time of freedom. After that, people were afraid to speak. They learned to keep their ideas to themselves.
