Gilbert's early military career took place in Europe and Ireland. In 1563, he was wounded during a siege in Normandy, France. Later, in 1566, he served in Ireland during the Tudor conquest. He worked under the command of Sir Henry Sidney. After the death of the leader Shane O'Neill in 1567, Gilbert became the governor of Ulster. He also served as a member of the Irish Parliament. In 1570, Sir Henry Sidney knighted him for his service. This period established Gilbert as a powerful figure in Irish affairs.
During his time in Ireland, Gilbert was involved in intense conflicts. He worked to establish settlements in provinces like Munster and Ulster. In 1569, he helped plan the Enterprise of Ulster. This was a large settlement project involving gentlemen from Devonshire. Gilbert also participated in military campaigns against the Geraldines of Desmond. These conflicts were part of a larger struggle over land and influence. During one campaign, Gilbert's horse was shot from under him. His shield was also pierced by a spear during the fight. Despite these dangers, he captured thirty to forty castles in a three-week march.
Gilbert was not only a soldier but also a thinker and politician. He was elected to the Parliament of England for Plymouth in 1571. Later, in 1572, he represented Queenborough. He was interested in science and education. He proposed an academy for London to the Queen. This idea eventually led to the creation of Gresham College. He also worked with leaders like William Cecil on alchemical projects. These projects attempted to change iron into copper through chemical processes. He sought to use his intellect to advance English society.

Gilbert's maritime expeditions were often difficult and expensive. He spent much of his family fortune on these voyages. In 1578, he led a fleet of seven vessels toward North America. However, heavy storms scattered the fleet and forced them back to port. In 1579, he led another mission with three ships. These included the *Anne Ager* and a small frigate named the *Squirrell*. This second trip also faced trouble when fog and rain caused him to get lost. These failed voyages were a recurring theme in his later life.
In his final years, Gilbert focused on large-scale colonization. He wanted to claim massive amounts of land in North America. He proposed to seize nine million acres near the Norumbega River. He sought funding from English Catholic investors. These investors wanted to settle in America to avoid restrictions in England. Gilbert hoped to build an empire that would challenge other powerful nations. His efforts to settle these new lands laid the groundwork for the future British Empire.
