He was born in Devon, England, around 1540. His family were farmers, and they moved to Kent during a time of religious trouble. As a young man, Drake learned to sail in the household of his relative, William Hawkins. He worked his way up from a simple seaman to a leader. This early training helped him become one of the most well-known sailors of his time.

In his twenties, Drake was part of early voyages that traded enslaved people. He sailed with his cousin, John Hawkins, on several trips between 1562 and 1569. These voyages were very hard and caused much harm to many people. During one battle at San Juan de Ulúa, the English fleet suffered a great defeat. Drake was the captain of a ship called the Judith during this fight. After this, he decided to stop trading and instead began attacking Spanish ships for treasure.

Drake is most famous for sailing around the entire world.

Drake also played a big role in protecting England from invasion. In 1588, the Spanish sent a huge fleet called the Armada to attack England. Drake served as a vice admiral in the English fleet during this fight. He helped the English ships defeat the Spanish fleet. Later, he even served as a Member of Parliament for places like Plymouth. While many English people saw him as a hero, the Spanish called him "El Draque," which means "The Dragon." They viewed him as a pirate because of his raids.

Life at sea was full of both adventure and danger.

He eventually worked as a purser. A ship's master even bequeathed a small barque to him. These early years provided the foundation for his career as a skilled seaman.

In his twenties, Drake participated in the early English slave trade. He sailed with his cousin, John Hawkins, on several voyages between 1562 and 1569. These expeditions involved capturing and selling Africans in the Spanish Indies. Historians note that approximately 1,200 Africans were enslaved during these four voyages. An estimated three times as many Africans were killed. In 1568, the English fleet faced a major defeat at the Battle of San Juan de Ulúa. Drake was the captain of the ship *Judith* during this conflict. This defeat changed his focus from trading to attacking Spanish interests.

Drake's most famous achievement was his global circumnavigation.

This voyage helped start a long era of conflict between England and Spain.

Drake also served as a military leader during the Anglo-Spanish War. This war began in 1585. In 1588, Spain sent the Spanish Armada to invade England. Drake served as a vice admiral in the English fleet. He helped repel the Spanish invasion. A year later, he led the English Armada in an attempt to destroy the remaining Spanish fleet. This second attempt was unsuccessful. Beyond his naval roles, Drake was also a Member of Parliament. He represented constituencies including Camelford, Bossiney, and Plymouth.

His expeditions often targeted the wealth of the Spanish Empire. In 1572, he led an independent mission to the Spanish Main. He targeted the Isthmus of Panama, where gold and silver were transported. In April 1573, Drake captured a Spanish silver train near Nombre de Dios. This raid yielded about 20 tons of gold and silver.

These successful raids made him both wealthy and famous. However, they also increased the hostility between the two nations.

Drake's life ended during a mission to Panama in 1596. He led an assault that ultimately failed. Following this, he died from dysentery, a common disease for sailors. His legacy remains a complex mix of exploration and conflict. He helped establish England as a major maritime power. At the same time, his actions contributed to the violent struggles of the era. His life connects the history of early global navigation to the intense political rivalries of the sixteenth century.
