Human variability

Humans are incredibly diverse in many ways. This wide range of differences is known as human variability. It includes many things like our physical appearance and our mental abilities.

We can see variation in body shape, skin color, and even personality. Some traits change between different groups of people. Other traits show big differences between males and females. This variety is a major part of what makes us human.

Many of these differences come from our genes. We get our genes from our parents through inheritance. Some traits are controlled by just one gene. Other traits are polygenic, which means many genes work together to decide them.

For example, eye color is controlled by several different genes. Mutations can also create new genetic differences. Some mutations are harmless, but others can cause diseases like Cystic Fibrosis. Most people only differ by one in every 1,000 base pairs.

Our environment also plays a huge role in how we look. The climate where we live can change our skin tone. People in very sunny places often have darker skin. This helps their bodies produce folate from UV radiation.

People living far from the equator often have lighter skin. This helps them absorb more sunlight to make vitamin D. Even things like pollution can change us. Arsenic in water can cause a disease called Blackfoot disease.

What we eat can also change our phenotype, or how we look and work. Nutrition is a big part of our environment because we can control it. Eating certain things can cause epigenetic changes. These are changes that affect how our genes are used without changing the DNA itself.

For example, a chemical called BPA can be found in some plastics. If it gets into food, it might change how a body controls weight. Even what a mother eats during pregnancy can affect her baby's health.

Scientists use many tools to measure these human differences. One method is called anthropometry, which is the study of body measurements.

They might measure height, weight, or even the size of an organ. Researchers also use biostatistics to find patterns in biological data. These measurements are very useful in our daily lives. They help engineers design better tools and safer seat belts for cars. They also help experts identify people using fingerprints or iris patterns.
