The human condition refers to the essential characteristics of human life. It encompasses key events like birth, learning, and death. It also includes internal experiences like emotion, aspiration, and reason. Many people study this topic to understand morality and conflict. It is a very broad subject with many different viewpoints. Scholars look at it through biology, art, and religion.

Philosophers and psychologists also analyze these complex themes. They seek to understand what it truly means to exist.

Different fields of study use unique methods to examine humanity. For example, religion offers definitive beliefs about our existence. Buddhism describes a perpetual cycle of suffering, death, and rebirth. Followers seek liberation from this cycle via the Noble Eightfold Path. In contrast, many Christians hold a different view of our state. They believe humans are born in a sinful condition. They believe salvation is found through Jesus Christ.

These different systems provide frameworks for understanding life and death.

Philosophy provides a way to reason through these deep questions. Ancient thinkers like Plato explored the nature of justice. He argued that justice is not just for individuals. Instead, he believed justice involves society as a whole. This led him to design a concept called a utopia. Two thousand years later, René Descartes changed philosophical thought. He famously declared, "I think, therefore I am." Descartes believed the faculty of reason determines truth. He is often called the father of modern philosophy.

Modern thinkers have developed specific schools of thought to address confusion. One such school is known as existentialism. Existentialists try to reconcile individual disorientation with the universe. They often view the universe as being absurd. This school of thought focuses on the individual's sense of purpose. It addresses the struggle to find meaning in a complex world.

This helps explain the psychological tension many people feel.

Psychology offers several theories to explain human behavior and needs. Maslow developed a hierarchy of needs to explain human motivation. Other psychologists study the concept of an identity crisis. Some research even focuses on terror management. Viktor Frankl developed a method called logotherapy. Frankl was a survivor of the Holocaust. He used logotherapy to help people discover and affirm meaning.

Another widespread method is cognitive behavioral therapy. This is often used as a treatment for clinical depression.

Biology provides a different lens through the theory of evolution. Charles Darwin established this theory to explain human origins. He posited that the human species is related to all others. This includes both living and extinct species. Darwin argued that natural selection is the primary factor for survival. This theory led to several subsequent belief systems. One was social Darwinism, which eventually lost its link to natural selection. Another is theistic evolution. This view suggests a creator deity acts through the laws of nature.

Literature and art serve as powerful tools for exploring these themes. Writers often use the human condition as a central subject. For instance, William Shakespeare wrote a famous monologue. It is known as "All the world's a stage." In this work, he summarizes seven distinct phases of human life. Art also uses symbols to represent these concepts. A painting might use symbols of life and death to show time.
