Before his television success, Laurie was a highly skilled competitive rower. He was born in Oxford, England, to parents of Scottish descent. His father, William George Ranald Mundell "Ran" Laurie, was an Olympic gold medalist in rowing. Laurie followed this family tradition at both school and university. In 1977, he won a British national title in a junior coxed pair. He also represented Britain's Youth Team at the 1977 Junior World Rowing Championships. He trained for up to eight hours every day. He was even on course to become an Olympic-standard rower before glandular fever forced him to stop.

His transition to acting was shaped by his time at Cambridge University. He joined the Cambridge Footlights, a famous university dramatic club. There, he met Emma Thompson and Stephen Fry. In 1980, Laurie served as the president of the Footlights. He and Fry wrote a revue called The Cellar Tapes. They took this show to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The group won the first Perrier Comedy Award, which was presented by Rowan Atkinson. This victory helped launch their careers in professional television and theater.

Laurie achieved massive global fame through the medical drama series House.

From 2004 to 2012, he starred as Dr. Gregory House, an acerbic physician. To play this role, Laurie learned a convincing American accent. He famously recorded his audition tape in a hotel bathroom. He did this because it was the only place with enough light. The accent was so convincing that producers initially thought he was American. During his time on the show, his salary rose to $350,000 per episode.
