The red huckleberry, or Vaccinium parvifolium, grows in maritime-influenced areas from coastal California to British Columbia. In the Pacific Northwest and the mountains of Montana and Idaho, you can find the black Vaccinium huckleberry, V. membranaceum. Another western variety is the blue Cascade huckleberry, known as V. deliciosum. It is important to note that the "garden huckleberry" (Solanum scabrum) is not a true huckleberry. It actually belongs to the nightshade family.
