The geography of Hubei is defined by its varied terrain. Most of the central and southern areas consist of the Jianghan Plain. This plain is a vast, low area filled with thousands of lakes. Water plays a fundamental role in the life of Hubei. Two massive rivers shape the landscape and the names of the land. The Yangtze River flows into the province from the west. It enters through the famous Three Gorges area. The Han River enters from the northwest. These two great rivers meet in the center of Wuhan. The names of the Jianghan Plain actually come from these rivers. "Jiang" represents the Yangtze, and "han" represents the Han River.

The history of Hubei spans thousands of years. The region was home to sophisticated Neolithic cultures in ancient times. During the Spring and Autumn period, the area was part of the State of Chu. The State of Chu was a powerful entity that controlled much of the middle and lower Yangtze River. Chu represented a unique blend of northern and southern Chinese cultures.

Later, the State of Qin expanded and eventually conquered the Chu heartland in 278 BC. The Qin dynasty became the first unified dynasty in China in 221 BC. This was followed by the Han dynasty, which established the province of Jingzhou. The Qin and Han rulers helped expand farmland by building river dikes. These dikes protected farmers from heavy summer floods.

Throughout the centuries, many different groups ruled the Hubei region. The Mongols conquered the area in 1279 and established the Huguang province. This large province included Hubei, Hunan, and parts of southern China. The Ming dynasty drove the Mongols out in 1368. Later, the Manchu Qing dynasty took control in 1644. The Qing eventually split the large Huguang province into the modern Hubei and Hunan. During the late Qing period, leaders like Zhang Zhidong introduced modernizing reforms. These reforms helped Wuhan become a prosperous center for industry. In 1911, the Wuchang Uprising in Wuhan helped start the Xinhai Revolution. This event overthrew the Qing dynasty and led to the Republic of China.
