Huangshan is a famous mountain range located in the southern Anhui province of eastern China.

The geology of Huangshan began about 100 million years ago during the Mesozoic era. At that time, an ancient sea disappeared because the land underwent uplift. Later, during the Quaternary Period, glaciers helped shape the landscape into its current form. These processes created many high peaks. Some of these granite peaks rise more than 1,000 meters above sea level. The three most famous are Lotus Peak at 1,864 meters, Bright Peak at 1,860 meters, and Celestial Peak at 1,829 meters.
Vegetation on the range changes depending on the elevation. Below 1,100 meters, the landscape is covered by mesic forests. These are forests that receive a steady supply of moisture. From 1,100 meters up to the treeline at 1,800 meters, deciduous forests grow. Above the treeline, the environment changes to alpine grasslands. The area is very important for plant life. It contains one-third of China's bryophyte families and more than half of its fern families.
The Huangshan pine, or *Pinus hwangshanensis*, is a famous tree found here. These trees show great vigor by growing straight out of hard rocks.
Historically, the mountains were known as Yishan during the Qin dynasty. In 747 AD, an imperial decree changed the name to Huangshan. This was done to honor Huang Di, the legendary Yellow Emperor. Some legends say he made pills of immortality here. Others say he ascended to Heaven from these peaks. This name change brought more attention to the area. Many temples were built as people began to visit more frequently. The mountains are famous for over 60,000 stone steps carved into the sides.
Visitors often experience unique weather and light effects. One famous sight is the "Sea of Clouds." This happens when clouds cover the peaks like an ocean.

Huangshan has inspired many artists and scientists. Between the Tang and Qing dynasties, people wrote more than 20,000 poems about it.
