He held the most important positions in the government, the Communist Party, and the military. He served as the chairman of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and the second premier of China. A premier is a high-ranking official who helps lead the state government. Hua became the successor to Mao Zedong, the previous leader of China. His rise to power and his eventual departure show how leadership shifts during periods of national transition.

Born in 1921 in Jiaocheng, Shanxi, Hua was the fourth son in his family.

He lost his father when he was only seven years old. In 1938, he joined the CCP during the Second Sino-Japanese War. He served as a soldier in the 8th Route Army for twelve years. During the Chinese Civil War, he worked as a propaganda chief. He eventually changed his name to Hua Guofeng to show his commitment to the revolution. This name change was common among many people in the party at that time.

After the war, Hua moved to the Hunan province in 1948. He became a local administrator in Xiangtan, which was near the birthplace of Mao Zedong. In 1952, he served as the secretary of the Xiangtan Special District. During this time, he built a memorial hall to honor Mao. Mao Zedong met Hua in 1955 and was impressed by his simplicity. As the Cultural Revolution began, Hua's influence grew within the province. He became the chairman of the local Revolutionary Committee in 1970. This helped him move toward the national stage of politics.

In the early 1970s, Hua moved to Beijing to work for the central government. In 1973, Mao appointed him as the Minister of Public Security. This role gave him control over the nation's police and security forces. He was also named vice premier by Zhou Enlai, another top leader.

These appointments showed that the top leaders trusted his abilities. He focused heavily on agricultural development and modernizing farming techniques. His work in agriculture helped prepare him for higher leadership roles.

The year 1976 brought several major events that changed China's leadership. First, Premier Zhou Enlai died in January. Shortly after, Mao Zedong died in September.

In the months between these deaths, Hua helped lead relief efforts after the Tangshan earthquake in July. After Mao died, Hua became the acting premier. He was also the second highest-ranking member of the CCP. This position made him the designated successor to Mao's leadership.

One of Hua's most significant actions was removing the Gang of Four. This group consisted of four leaders: Jiang Qing, Zhang Chunqiao, Wang Hongwen, and Yao Wenyuan. They held much power and were responsible for many strict policies. Hua believed that if he did not act, they might remove him first. On October 6, 1976, Hua and his supporters used force to arrest them. He worked with Marshal Ye Jianying and security chief Wang Dongxing. This action helped end the most intense period of the Cultural Revolution.

Following the arrests, Hua became the first person to hold three top offices at once. He was the party chairman, the premier, and the chairman of the Central Military Commission. This meant he led the party, the government, and the military. His authority was supported by a quote from Mao that said, "With you in charge, I am at ease."

However, a new power struggle soon began with other leaders. Deng Xiaoping and his supporters wanted to change how China was run.

Between December 1978 and June 1981, Hua was gradually forced out of his top positions.
