To grow this large, the bank uses a way of expanding through buying other companies. This is often called an acquisition.

The story of HSBC began a long time ago in East Asia.
Many different leaders helped the bank grow over the years. Sir Thomas Jackson was a chief manager from 1876 to 1902. During his time, the bank became a leader in Asia. He helped build new offices in Bangkok and Manila. Later, Michael Turner became chief manager in 1953. He helped the bank do more than just one kind of business. He also helped the bank buy banks in the Middle East.
Today, you can find HSBC in 57 different countries and territories. It has offices in Africa, Asia, Oceania, Europe, and the Americas. You can see its name on big stock exchanges. For example, it is listed on the London Stock Exchange. It is also on the Hong Kong and Bermuda exchanges.
HSBC Holdings plc is a massive British universal bank and financial services group.
The bank's history began in 1865 in Hong Kong.
Growth happened through expansion and the opening of new branches.

The modern structure of the group was created through a major reorganization. In 1991, HSBC Holdings plc was established in London. This new entity became the parent company for the original Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation.
HSBC grew even larger by using acquisitions to enter new markets.

The bank has faced significant challenges and complex economic shifts. In 2007, HSBC was the first major bank to report large losses from the subprime mortgage crisis. It had to write down its holdings of mortgage securities by $10.5 billion. In 2009, the bank decided to shut down its HSBC Finance branch network in the United States. This decision resulted in nearly 6,000 job losses. The bank's former chairman, Stephen Green, noted that the acquisition of the subprime lender was a mistake. The bank has also dealt with investigations regarding money laundering in Mexico.
Today, HSBC is a central part of the global financial system. It serves approximately 39 million customers across 57 countries and territories. In 2025, Forbes ranked HSBC as number 15 in its Global 2000 list of large companies.
