Howqua was a famous trader from China. His real name was Wu Bingjian. He was born in 1769. He was once the richest man in the world.

Howqua worked in a place called Canton. He was a leader of a group called the Cohong. This group of traders was allowed to trade silk and porcelain. These are fine fabrics and plates. He also led a business called the E-wo hong. His father started this family business.

Howqua helped many foreign business partners. Some of these men built big houses in America. They hung his portraits on their walls to say thank you. One time, a big fire hit Canton. People say the silver melted into a long stream. Later, Howqua helped raise a large sum of money for his country. This was after a war with Britain.

After the wars, his family lost much of its wealth. His large estate is now in a poor area. His name lives on in new places. For example, a settlement in Australia is named after him.
