Housekeeping is the management and routine support required to maintain an organized physical institution.

This work involves activities like cleaning, tidying, cooking, shopping, and paying bills. It ensures that spaces occupied by people remain functional and orderly. While many people think of a cleaner, housekeeping is a much broader role. A cleaner focuses specifically on cleaning tasks. A housekeeper manages the entire environment and its routine needs. This concept applies to houses, ships, hospitals, or even factories.

The process of maintaining a space often begins with tidying. Tidying is an organizational step that occurs before actual cleaning begins. It involves picking up items that are not in their proper storage places. These items are checked and returned to their allocated spots. This process reduces the risk of damage to objects. It also removes hazards that could cause people to trip. Tidying creates a clear space for the next steps. Without it, items can hinder or prevent proper cleaning of hard-to-reach areas.

Once a space is tidy, the cleaning stage begins. This involves housecleaning, which includes disposing of rubbish and cleaning dirty surfaces.

People use various tools like vacuums, brooms, mops, and sponges. Cleaning products such as detergents, disinfectants, and bleach are often used. Dusting is a vital part of this stage because dust can become suspended in the air. This can cause sneezing or breathing difficulties for people in the room. To stay safe, workers may use protective apparel like rubber gloves, face covers, and eyewear.

Housekeeping is divided into several distinct types based on the setting. Domestic housekeeping refers to the maintenance of private residences, such as homes or apartments. This includes tasks like laundry, vacuuming, and disinfecting surfaces. There are also different levels of domestic service. Regular domestic cleaning happens on a weekly or monthly basis to maintain hygiene. One-off cleaning is done for specific occasions, such as after a party or a renovation. Specialized cleaning focuses on expert tasks like carpet or oven cleaning.

Institutional housekeeping serves commercial and public organizations. In hotels, resorts, and inns, the housekeeping department provides a safe and appealing environment. This is often called a "back of the house" department because it does not directly generate income. In hospitals and clinics, housekeeping is a support service often known as "Sanitation." This department is responsible for the upkeep of patient care areas and staff areas. Similarly, housekeeping on cruise ships functions much like it does in a hotel. Even prisons and dormitories require these organized management activities.

History shows that housekeeping has required significant leadership and skill. In the Victorian era, around 1861, Mrs. Beeton's Book of Household Management was a key guide. It described the housekeeper as second in command within a large house. In establishments with a house steward, the housekeeper acted as the immediate representative of her mistress.

This role has been vital through many eras, including difficult times like 1941 in London.

Even in military settings, such as US Army cabins, housekeeping remains essential.

Beyond homes, housekeeping is a critical part of industrial and workplace safety. Workplace housekeeping is the ongoing process of keeping a work area hygienic and orderly. It involves managing the layout, aisle marking, and storage facilities. This is a basic component of fire and incident prevention in occupational health and safety. Industrial housekeeping uses similar processes specifically within production environments. By keeping areas free of extraneous objects, companies reduce workplace hazards. This systematic approach protects both the workers and the equipment used in industry.

Today, technology is changing how these tasks are performed. Smart home technology is revolutionizing domestic housekeeping through automation. Robotic vacuums now take over the task of floor cleaning. Self-cleaning ovens are another example of technology reducing the drudgery of scrubbing. These innovations aim to maintain a comfortable home with less manual effort. Whether through modern robots or traditional mops, the goal remains the same. Housekeeping ensures that our shared environments stay clean, safe, and productive.
