The mechanism of an hourglass relies on a very steady and controlled flow. The specific duration of time measured depends on several physical factors. These include the quantity of the material, the coarseness of the particles, and the width of the neck. To achieve a perfect, constant flow, the size of the granules must be carefully chosen. The ratio of the granule bead to the width of the neck should be between 1/12 and 1/2 of the neck's width.

If the grains are too large or too small, the timing will not be accurate. Early versions were made by joining two separate bulbs with a cord and wax. By 1760, makers began blowing both bulbs together as a single piece. This new method kept moisture out and helped regulate internal pressure.

Different materials have been used inside the bulbs throughout history. While some early models used silica sand, many others used different substances. Common materials included powdered marble, tin or lead oxides, and even pulverized, burnt eggshells. These materials were tested to see which provided the most constant flow. Because the rate of flow is independent of the depth in the upper reservoir, the timing remains consistent. Furthermore, unlike water clocks, hourglasses will not freeze in cold weather. This reliability made them essential for many different types of work and travel.

The history of timekeeping shows that the hourglass evolved from older technologies. Its predecessor was the clepsydra, or water clock, used in Babylon and Egypt as early as the 16th century BCE. However, the first documented example of an hourglass in Europe appears in a 1338 fresco by Ambrogio Lorenzetti.

During Ferdinand Magellan's voyage around the globe, the ship's inventory included 18 hourglasses from Barcelona. A ship's page was responsible for turning the glasses to provide entries for the ship's log. On land, hourglasses were an inexpensive alternative to mechanical clocks. Some specialized models, like the 17th-century Italian four-way sandglass, could measure quarter, half, and full hour intervals.

These new clocks eventually became smaller and cheaper than sandglasses. In the 18th century, John Harrison invented the marine chronometer, which was much more stable at sea. In 1761, his invention could measure a journey from England to Jamaica within five seconds. Despite this, the hourglass remained a desirable object because of its elegant design. It transitioned from a necessary tool to a significant cultural icon.

Today, the hourglass remains a widespread symbol in art and technology. In computer interfaces, an hourglass cursor often indicates that a program is busy with a task.
