Egyptian pilots launched a surprise attack on the east bank of the Suez Canal. These pilots hit 90% of their targets during the mission. This success made Mubarak a national hero to many people. However, some people later disagreed about how much credit he deserved. A military leader named Shahdan El-Shazly said he altered documents to take credit. Despite these debates, his military service helped him move into politics.
In 1975, President Anwar Sadat chose Mubarak to be Vice President.
He traveled to places like Riyadh and Damascus to help with peace deals. In 1981, President Sadat was killed in an assassination. Mubarak then became the president through a single-candidate referendum.
He helped Egypt rejoin the Arab League in 1989. This moved the League's headquarters back to Cairo. He also supported the peace process between Israel and Palestine.
While Mubarak brought stability, his rule also faced many problems.
The government used a state of emergency to stop political opposition. Many people also dealt with corruption and harsh security services. In 2011, a revolution began with 18 days of big protests.

The Egyptian Air Force launched a surprise attack on the east bank of the Suez Canal. Egyptian pilots hit 90% of their targets during this mission. In 1975, President Anwar Sadat appointed Mubarak as Vice President.

The legal process for Mubarak lasted several years.
In 2013, the Court of Cassation overturned his life sentence and ordered a retrial. During a retrial in 2015, Mubarak and his sons were convicted of corruption. However, the legal situation changed again in 2017. The Court of Cassation acquitted Mubarak of the charges. He was released from custody on 24 March 2017. Mubarak died in 2020 at the age of 91.
