This act provided $165 million for the dam and other water projects. It also included the Imperial Dam and the All-American Canal.
Construction was a monumental task that took place during the Great Depression. A consortium called Six Companies, Inc. won the contract. They began work in early 1931. The project was very difficult due to the intense summer heat. There were also very few facilities near the construction site. Despite these challenges, the workers finished the dam on March 1, 1936. This was more than two years ahead of the original schedule. 

The workforce for this project was enormous. At its peak in July 1934, there were 5,251 workers on the payroll. Many people traveled to the area seeking employment during the economic downturn. To house these workers, the government built Boulder City, Nevada. Some workers lived in camps like Ragtown along the river. The construction was dangerous, and more than 100 lives were lost during the process. 
Today, the Hoover Dam remains a major center for energy and tourism. Its generators provide electricity for public and private utilities. This power reaches Nevada, Arizona, and California. The dam also creates Lake Mead, which is a massive reservoir. About 7 million tourists visit the dam every year. While US Route 93 used to run across the top of the dam, the Hoover Dam Bypass now carries much of the traffic.
