Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region of China.

It is located on the southern coast of China. The territory sits just south of the city of Shenzhen. It consists of three main parts: Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and the New Territories. With 7.5 million residents, it is a very crowded place. In fact, it is the fourth-most densely populated region in the world. Hong Kong is a major global hub for finance and trade. It functions under a unique principle called "one country, two systems." This allows it to keep separate governing and economic systems from mainland China.

The name "Hong Kong" has several possible origins. It is often translated to mean "fragrant harbour" or "incense harbour."

One theory is that the name refers to incense factories along the northern Kowloon coast. These factories stored incense near Aberdeen Harbour for export. Another theory suggests the "fragrant" part refers to the sweet taste of freshwater from the Pearl River. A different idea comes from Sir John Davis. He suggested the name meant "red torrent." He believed this described the color of soil near a waterfall on the island. The name was first romanised as "He-Ong-Kong" in 1780.

Human history in this region stretches back tens of thousands of years. Archaeological finds in the Sai Kung Peninsula suggest human traces date to the Paleolithic period.

Some experts date these stone tools to 35,000 or 39,000 years ago. By the Middle Neolithic period, about 6,000 years ago, humans occupied the region widely. Early settlers included Austronesians and later the Yue people. During the Bronze Age, people used quartz and stone jewelry. The Qin dynasty incorporated the area into China in 214 BCE. Later, the southern Song court was briefly located in modern-day Kowloon City.

The modern political history of Hong Kong began with British colonial rule. This started after the First Opium War. The Qing dynasty ceded Hong Kong Island to the United Kingdom in 1842. The British colony expanded to the Kowloon Peninsula in 1860. In 1898, the United Kingdom obtained a 99-year lease for the New Territories.

During World War II, Japan occupied the territory from 1941 to 1945. After the war, the British resumed control. Eventually, the United Kingdom handed the territory back to China in 1997. This handover followed the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration.

Today, Hong Kong is a massive center for the global economy. It is the third-ranked global financial centre in the world.
