An anthropologist named Otto Schoetensack described it in 1908. He named the species Homo heidelbergensis after the area near Heidelberg. This jawbone was called Mauer 1. At that time, it was the oldest human fossil found in Europe. 
Many important fossils help us understand these ancient people. British anthropologist Chris Stringer helped define the species again in 1983. He used fossils like Kabwe 1 and Petralona 1. He also used the Bodo and Arago fossils. These skulls are often grouped together because of their brow ridge. A brow ridge is the thick bone above the eyes. These fossils help show how they were different from other humans.
