Long ago, a unique group of tiny humans lived on the island of Flores in Indonesia.

Scientists call this extinct species Homo floresiensis. Some people also call them "Flores Man" or "Hobbits." These people lived on the island until modern humans arrived about 50,000 years ago.

They are very important to study because they show how humans can change in different places. Their small size makes them one of the most interesting discoveries in history.

Scientists believe these small humans became tiny through a thing called insular dwarfism. This is a way that animals on islands grow smaller over time.

Since Flores is an island, the ancestors likely reached it by rafting on the sea. They probably arrived between 1.27 million and 1 million years ago. Once they were stuck on the island, their bodies changed to fit the environment. This process helped them survive in their isolated home for a very long time.

In September 2003, a team from Australia and Indonesia found the first bones.

They were looking for signs of human migration in Asia. Instead, they found a nearly complete skeleton in the Liang Bua cave. This skeleton was a 30-year-old woman named LB1. She is often called "Flo" or the "Little Lady of Flores." In 2004, scientists Peter Brown and his team named the new species.

Many different pieces of evidence have been found at the Liang Bua site.

Researchers have recovered partial skeletons from 15 different individuals. One arm bone, called LB3, is about 74,000 years old. Stone tools were also found in the cave from 50,000 to 190,000 years ago. Other older remains were found at a place called Mata Menge. These older teeth and jaws date back to about 700,000 years ago. These numbers help us see how long they lived on the island.

Learning about these tiny humans helps us understand our own history.

Some people once argued that they were just modern humans with a medical condition. They thought their small brains were caused by a problem called microcephaly. However, many studies have rejected this idea. Scientists found that their brain shapes were actually quite similar to ours. This proves they were a separate, amazing species that lived alongside our ancestors.
